Getting School Admissions

Hi All,

This is my first ever blog attempt and if u guys find any mistakes u may have to ignore it.

By the way I wanted to convey my messages on getting school admissions in Chennai for LKG. As a parent of a Girl child of 3 years I am running from school after school for the past 2 years to get  her an admission in a decent school.

All the Good schools within the surroundings admit students only when the kids reach an age of 3.5 years. But the real problem is not just the age criteria but something else...

As a parent I am yet to figure out what really these schools are looking for admitting a child in their school. Agreed they have limited seats...but there should be some transparency while admitting a child in their school. As most of the poor parents I also stood in line for hours...some times started waiting from Midnight till early morning till they issued the application forms... and I atleast expect some reasons for failure to get admission in these schools from the management.

But after all the agonising wait what we could hear is a common and standard reply the results will be announced in the notice board and we cannot do anything more than this.

Also there should not be any interview for the kid before the admission.  What a kid will know before going to school...if they feel that the kids should possess best qualities then what these schools are supposed to do (by the way My kid could answer all the questions from all schools and despite that she was denied the admission). Will they take credit for grooming good quality students rather than childrem from all backgrounds? What about children from poor communities who are unable to provide good education?

I personally feel Government is duty bound to implement the following guidelines:

1. Admission should be strictly based on the proximity of the child from the residence.
2. No matter whatever the child's and their parents' background..all students should be admitted.
3. Applications should be made available freely and through website also. This will avoid mad rush and long waiting hours in queue.
4. No matter whatever the recommendation..whatever level it is from..it should be made very clear that the student should not be admitted.
5. Finally the last criteria of selection should be age criteria.

After all these if the kid is not admitted then there should be transparency from the school management by reasoning out very clearly to the parent that the kid/ward could not be admitted for lack of seats.

I hope atleast in future more good schools are opened so that the aggrived and anxious parents like me are not put to torture like the way myself and my wife are going through in the past several months....

Prakash
